Living in Colchester means enjoying a town rich in history, from the Roman walls to the bustling High Street. But with tree-lined roads, leafy suburbs, and plenty of older housing stock, blocked gutters are a common problem across CO1–CO7.
If you spot the early warning signs, you can prevent damp, rot, and expensive repairs before they happen.
Common Signs of Blocked Gutters in Colchester
Water overflowing during rain
If you notice water pouring over the side of your gutters during a downpour, there’s almost certainly a blockage.Sagging or misaligned gutters
Heavy build-ups of moss, leaves and silt cause gutters to sag. This is common in older Colchester properties with timber fascias.Damp patches on walls
Overflowing water can leave dirty streaks and damp marks on brickwork — a risk for many Victorian terraces around New Town and Lexden.Plants growing in the gutter
If you can see grass or weeds sprouting, the gutter is holding water permanently and needs clearing urgently.Pooling water near the base of your home
This can eventually affect foundations — particularly an issue in Colchester’s clay-based soil areas like Highwoods.
